Louie's Story Louie (formerly Lucky) came to Homeward Bound in June 2010 when he was found alone in an abandoned home after his owners left him. He had flees, he had lost a lot of hair, he was malnourished and he was blind in both eyes. In spite of his circumstances, he had lots of love to share with his foster family. He managed to find his way around the house, usually staying close to me (his foster mom). It wasn’t long before his hair started to grow in nicely when he began eating healthy. His blindness didn’t stop him from living life. He loved to go for walks, play with squeaky toys, cuddle, and play ball. Louie also met the doctors at Michigan State University (MSU) Vet School (Comparative Ophthalmology). His eyes were tested to see if his vision could be restored, however they found his retinas had degenerated and that surgery would not restore his vision. Louie didn’t really care – he had become such a happy, confident boy. After 5 months, Louie found a wonderful new home with Charlene (his forever mom) and Rocky (his blind brother) in October 2010. Louie has been with his new family almost one year now and – I am happy to report, Charlene and I have become good friends. Louie is now a member of the Dr. Paws Pet Therapy Program. He visits nursing homes and hospitals -- and he brings joy to everyone he meets! Charlene told me the story of a little boy that Louie met at the hospital who didn’t want to take his medicine. Charlene told the boy that Louie had to take allergy shots and even though he didn’t like them, he did it anyway.
Well, the little boy decided that he should take his
medicine too! Louie is such inspiration and a good
role model.
I finally caught up with Louie recently, Charlene says
that Louie is such a funny, active boy and he makes
her laugh all the time.
