Scout's Story
I had been searching for a puppy for months when I came across the St. Patty’s litter on Petfinder. I fell in love with a puppy who had the body of a Lab but the markings of an Australian Shepherd. I put my application in and on their six-week birthday, drove the 2.5-hour drive from Kalamazoo to Canton in hopes of bring home the first pet I could call my own.

When I arrived, I was terribly disappointed to find that the puppy had 2 other families interested in her. I almost gave up hope and thought I would be heading home alone. Thankfully, I saw Scout (Ava). She was playing with her brothers and sisters – completely ignoring all of the humans who wanted to hold and pet the puppies. I thought it was funny that while her siblings stood at the fence hoping to get attention, that Scout would tackle and wrestle him or her to the floor. I saw her and realized that she would be the perfect addition to our young family.

My boyfriend, Andy, had a 2-year old yellow Lab, Chase, who is extremely well behaved but a little restless. He really needed a friend he to play with. I knew she and Chase would be great friends.

Over the next year, in addition to puppy shots and being spayed, Scout went through a trying time when she was diagnosed with demodectic mange. Demodectic mange is a hereditary disease that caused her lose much of the hair
on top of her head. After six medical dips from the veterinarian,
she finally overcame her illness and has been living a healthy,
happy ever since.

In 2009, Andy and I got married and now reside in Vicksburg,
Michigan with Scout and Chase. They enjoy wrestling with each
other, going for walks, playing in the kiddy pool and sleeping.
